Is black sand beach in Big Island kind to the feet?

Is there any camping on the Big Island – Hawaii?

actuyally green sand beach is much better but requires a 2 mile hike or 4wd vehivle to get to it, but the walk in is very easy..black sand beach was rather small and was mostly black cliffs abve the surf with some small beaches in between..

Any Suggestions on inexpensive authentic hawaiian places to eat on the big island, Kauai, or Oahu?

My husband and I are going to Hawaii (The big island, Kauai, and Oahu) and are looking for authentic Hawaiian food and places to eat that are inexpensive.

There are many restaurants on Oahu. When you mean "authentic hawaiian", I am assuming you mean "island, non-touristy" food, right, and not necessarily polynesian. Because island food is a mix of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Portugese and American.

When I get the need for a good bowl of saimin, spam musubi or mac salad, I go to Boulevard’s on Dillingham (west of downtown Honolulu). It is in a more industrial part of town, but this is authentic island food…you will be the only tourist. Get their large bowl of won ton min, oh-my-god it is sooo good.

For breakfast/lunch, try Kaka’ako Kitchen in the Ward Center which is near Ala Moana shopping center. You eat on paper plates but the food is really interesting, very creative.

You must also try a Hawaiian Shave Ice with azuki beans and mochi. Go to Kokonuts in the Koko Marina Shopping Center in Hawaii Kai (on the way to Hanauma Bay).

There is a kalua pork sandwich stand in Waimanalo (windward side) called Kenneke’s on the side of the highway…you will see a line of people waiting for their loco moco or kalua pork sandwiches.

For true Hawaiian (polynesian) food, I think someone mentioned Ono Hawaiian Food, and this really is the best. But you can also try Helena’s Hawaiian Food on N School Street. Both will have lomi lomi salmon, kalua pork, spam musubi, ribs, poi (fermented taro root, an acquired taste…), lau lau…whew! But notice that it is STILL a mix of multi-cultural food. Let’s eat!!!!

For better fare, you can try the Pineapple Room next to Macy’s in the Ala Moana Shopping Center. This is owned by Alan Wong, considered the best chef in the islands and is a great buy (much cheaper than his flagship restaurant on King Street). Lunch is a better deal if you are really watching it, but you should try it at least once…

On Kauai, there is a restaurant that has been there FOREVER and serves traditional island noodles called "saimin". The restaurant is called "Hamura Saimin" in Lihue and is a MUST if you go. This is not at all fancy, you eat at counters.

Inexpensive take-out food is a way of life in the islands…you buy a "box lunch" or dinner at restaurants called "Okazu-ya", a term from the Japanese. Everyone has their own favorites they will tell you are the best. Try it, and go sit on a white sandy beach to eat. You will love it.

Has anyone been biking or hiking up Mauna Kea or anywhere else on the Big Island of Hawaii?

My family is going to Hawaii to visit some family, and I’d like to take a few days and fly to the Big Island and go up Mauna Kea. Has anyone does this or know of any people doing this independent of tour groups and without tour guides?

yeah it’s fun there, oh just go to any gas station or any store, look outside, and there will be free tour guides all over the place, the tour guides are strategically placed all over the island so tourists would know where to go to spend their money and leave hawaii with just 2 pennies in their pockets

If anyone has visited the Big Island in Hawaii, I would like some tips.?

My husband and 7 year old daughter are planning a vacation to Hawaii’s "Big Island" this August, and from what I can tell, it is a very big island. If you’ve visited, I love to hear what towns you stayed in and what your opinions are of them. Which is nicer, Kona or Hilo? What natural wonders are a must see! And anything else you found really memerable. Just keep in mind we will have a little girl with us, so nude beaches and such are out. Thanks for any input.

I have been to The Big Island Many times. I love Kona side best as it has more sun. You should visit Hilo as they have at least 3 big waterfalls that are easy to get to and see. Rent a car. You must go see the volcano’s. There is the City of refuge and the painted church. Also the captain cook monument.
As you have a 7 year old you need to space out your trips. It is a 8 -10 hour day to do the Hilo side and see the volcanos. You may even consider spending one night there. There is a large macadamian nut farm you can tour. One big waterfall is only about 1 mile from the center of town.
Shopping is better as it is less expensive.
Stay near a beach in kona and do not stay at the King Kamahmea hotel it has bugs. My nephew was bitten several times ugh!! If you can afford a resort hotel like the Hilton or raddison they are at the other end of the same side of the island as Kona . Waimea is a lovely mountain town and it is cool with nice restaurants and good shopping. It can rain there and be sunny in Kona.
You can go to the top of Kilauea and drive there yourself even though the signs say you cannot. Remember it is 13000+ fet so if you have breathing problems the air is thin. Can have snow up there in December while summer on the ground below. Enjoy

After some research, I have found that The Big Island is the most economical, still beautiful and has plenty of jobs. I am contemplating a move there in the next year or so and want to have perspective from someone who either lives there or has been there. What is the difference between Hawaii and Oahu?

Hawaii is very spread out. Kona has outgrown itself, and the infrastructure needs to catch up with the amount of people that live here, but we make due. Oahu they will never catch up with the amount of people, there is not enough land. Hilo is coll but kiond of wet. I like South Kona, but work is in Kona town or north in Kohala, so there is traffic. Probably to start, I recommend Waikaloa, or a little north of Kona. You can find a place close by to work, and feel out the island.
