How many people live on the 4 major Hawaiian Islands? What are the major differences/attractions on each one?
Please have references… I’m curious how many people live on each of the islands. Also, what makes each island so special and unique? I’ve never been to Hawaii, but really want to go, and my husband wants to live there (he’s been there before)
In order from most populous (credit to Wikipedia):
-Oahu (900,000)
-Hawaii aka The Big Island (201,109)
-Maui (117,644)
-Kaui (63,689)
-Molokai (7,404)
-Lanai (3,193)
Ok, here we go with the differences (the gist of it):
-Oahu has both the city (Honolulu), and country. Also suburbs. It’s home to the famous North Shore, where surfing competitions and several movies (Sarah Marshall), and TV shows (Lost) were filmed. As people on the other islands say, Oahu is "made of concrete." Ala Moana Center, the worlds largest open air shopping mall, is located here, along with several other malls scattered around the island.
-Hawaii aka The Big Island is the biggest island, hence it’s nickname. The Big Island has rainforests, and the Volcanoes National Park, where you can see lava tumbling into the ocean if you go to the right spots. (Yes, there is an active volcano there). Majority of the island is made of molten lava rock, and you’ll see that people create words/names on them with white pebbles. Go to the top of Mauna Kea for a breathtaking view.
-Maui is, in my opinion, the most beautiful island. Here you’ll find the Maui Ocean Center and the beachfront tourist town of Lahaina. You can hike up Haleakala and bike down it if you wish. Whale-watching is prominent here. There’s a highway called the Hana Highway, which has a lot of twists and turns, but beautiful scenery.
-Kauai is nicknamed The Garden Isle for its beauty, but I don’t buy that. You can explore the caves. There is Waimea Canyon, which is dubbed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.
-Molokai transports you back to old Hawaii. It’s kind of like Maui and Kauai in terms of scenery.
-Lanai…well, you’ll need a four-wheeler to see most of the landmarks and sites. Not too familiar with this island as I’ve never been to it, as you can tell by my horrible description of it.
Grouping the islands together, here are their similarities:
-The Big Island, Maui, Kaui, Molokai, and Lanai are very laid back communities
-You can do water sports on all islands (obviously)
-All have good food
-You will be treated well on any island. The tourists that say that they’ve been hassled by locals is because they either went where they weren’t supposed to, or disrespected us. This doesn’t mean that you have to watch your back and be on constant high alert. Just use your common sense.
I believe this is it for my lengthly answer.

In the following link you can see these tiny lighter colored spots in the ocean. Are these islands? are they almost islands that just arent above the water’s surface? could I potentially go live on one of these little islands in the middle of nowhere, claim it as my own? Do they have names???

hawaiian islands?
Are they all the same age or are they older at the northwestern end or the southeastern end?
explain please
AZ is basically correct, but I’d like to add that the island chain extends far beyond Kauai. In fact, it extends to Kure Atoll, just beyond Midway, which is also part of the chain.
The hotspot that is creating the chain is forming a new island Southeast of the Big Island, but it will be long after our lifetimes before breaks the surface, gets nice beaches, condo’s, and an airport.
What is the best cruise that goes to all/ most of the hawaiian islands with kids?
I have a 4, 6, and 6 year old and I want to go on one of those cruises that goes and visits different islands in hawaii but has places to drop off the kids while my wife and I do adult things. Can anyone help me?
Check online website www.ncl.com
I work with NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line almost half of my life…and been with Hawaiian cruises for 5 years…NCL have US flagship fleet called NCLA-means NCLAmerica that does solely hawaiian islands cruises-it’s FIRST in cruise history where an international flagship caters exclusively american summer vacation capital of the world.., and we have programs like Kids Corner that handles merely kids activities where our kids crew takes care of…It’s a family cruise ship.., you name it and we have it all…visit our website to answer almost anything about cruising that you have in mind…

Marine Debris B-roll from NW Hawaiian Islands
Hi-resolution video also available for download at http://marinedebris.noaa.gov/projects/himdap.html
NOAA and several partners in Hawaii announced a comprehensive long-term plan to actively assess and remove plastics, derelict fishing gear, and other human sources of marine debris from coastal waters and coral reefs along the island chain. The plan, a first of its kind for the nation, will be instrumental in protecting the states coastal communities and marine life from the thousands of pounds of marine debris that wash ashore each year.

How close to the Hawaiian Islands do you have to be to get their radio stations?
I live in Oceanside CA about 2200 miles from the islands.
Is that too far? I can pick up radio stations from Albuquerque NM 650 miles away at night.
How close to the islands do you think you would need to even pick up their static?
Well, I live near San Francisco and can get in radio stations from Seattle and L.A., depending on the circumstances. It all depends on whether you’re listening to AM or FM, what the weather’s like, and the terrain.
It’s pretty unlikely you’ll be able to get in FM stations from Hawaii, but with a little bit of luck, you might be able to hear some AM radio from the islands.
I wouldn’t spend to much time working on it, though. For starters, you’d have to find a station that is "blank" in your area of Oceanside. For instance, if there are no stations in your area broadcasting on 710 AM, maybe you can get Hawaii’s 710 AM. Or you might also get another faraway city’s 710 AM; there’s no controlling that stuff.
And as far as hearing their "static", any time you’re not picking up a signal, that’s static. If you want to tune to a blank station and tell yourself it’s Hawaii’s "static", then I suppose that works!
BTW, the radio industry has narrowed itself down to very few companies and many stations you hear in big cities are the exact same as in other cities. For instance, San Francisco and Seattle both have country stations called "The Wolf" with the exact same logos and some of the same DJs. In fact, last time I was in Waikiki, I heard a local San Francisco DJ voicetracking a shift for a Hawaii station! In other words, you may be listening to the same stuff that’s playing in Hawaii even when you’re tuned to a local station!
My final word of advice to you is simple: go to the websites for your favorite Hawaiian radio stations and click "listen live", and listen to the stations over the web!
