Hawaii Vacation Connection – NCL Hawaii Cruise
Two years ago NCL, Norwegian Cruise Line, pulled three of its four ships out of Hawaii citing problems with their competition and lack of profitability. At that time it was a big blow to the tourism industry here and came as a big surprise because the Pride of Hawaii, a brand-new ship wasnt even in service for an entire year before it got the 86. Part of the problem was management. Weekly cruises around the Hawaiian Islands was something that hadnt been tried here for many years. As a result, it got off to a very rocky start with lots of consumer complaints. Many of the complaints centered around issues about the ships work force, which by law, must be American only. Many felt that Americans could not do as good a job at customer service as the foreign flagged ships.

Looking for Hawaiian Vacation Ideas for a family of 3 – Any suggestions?
It will be my wife, myself and our 16 year old son. Will be our first ever visit to Hawaii. We live in N.J. and would be willing to set a budget at up to $7000.
We want to see Pearl Harbor, Volcanoes, Luau’s and Great Beaches. We may not go again so want to get a good exposure.
Should we fly out and find a resort or take a Hawaiian Island Cruise? Don’t want to be locked on one Island or on a ship! We do like cruising though.
For further consideration, we would fly out of Newark N.J.
Thanks in advance!
Additional information – we will probably travel in July/August and would probably have time for 7 days in the islands.
For a 7-night trip between April 7-May 6 your airfare will run about $700 pp from Newark to Honolulu. (I just plugged in random dates because you didn’t specify when you will be traveling.) $2100 will eat up a good chunk of your $7000 budget.
Pearl Harbor is located on Oahu. Oahu also has some nice luau and beautiful beaches. The only currently active volcano is located on a different island, Hawaii, which is also known as the Big Island. Island-hopping will cost you at least $80 pp round trip, so if you want to fit in two islands, budget for the interisland airfare as well.
You won’t see much of anything if you take a cruise. The excursions are expensive and you only spend a few hours in each port. I don’t think it’s worth it if you really want to experience Hawaii.
Check out www.vrbo.com for condo rentals. You might save a little cash by renting a condo (instead of a hotel room) and fixing some of your own meals in house rather than eating at restaurants 3 meals a day. Hawaii is very expensive. With the budget you’ve stated, you won’t have much money for activities after airfare, hotel, and food.
Good luck!
Should I cancel my Hawaiian vacation until the poor state has recovered from the devastation of the 3′ tsunami?
If I can find a group to pay for my flight and lodging…I’ll donate my time to the clean up effort.
Hawaii VAcation Connection – Akaka Bill – Episode 368 part 2 -
http://www.hawaii-aloha.com/ – The Akaka Bill is back in the news, having once again passed the U.S. House of Representatives. ( It failed in two previous attempts to get Senate approval but prospects look better for passage this time.) Rather than describe the provisions of the bill, Id like to give you a way to look at the efforts to establish self-governance for Native Hawaiians and what that process means to casual visitors to the islands.

I’m planning a vacation to the Hawaiian islands in next month. Anyone have suggestions?
I’m going for 14 days next month. I want to hike, see the beaches, volcanoes, waterfalls and stay in hostels or camp. Does anyone have suggestions on the accessibility of getting around the islands, where to go or stay? Any suggestions are appreciated. thanks!
For 2 weeks and all that you want to do, the Big Island is definitely the island for you. The Big Island has great hiking and waterfalls, lots of beaches, and it’s the only island with an actively flowing volcano. You can get some tips here: http://beforeyougo.com/node/3
The Big Island is probably my favorite vacation location of all the places I’ve been in the world.

Hawaiian Vacation: How much money should I expect to spend?
I’m thinking about going to hawaii with my girlfriend… if we buy tickets early, they will be about $250 each. We could stay for a week in a condo that a friend has a timeshare with for another $250 each.
So now we are up to $500 each… and the question I am trying to find out is:
About how much should I expect to spend on food and other touristy stuff?
We don’t plan on going on any "tours"… mainly just enjoying the beaches and what not. But yeah, if you have recently been to hawaii on vacation… can you tell me how long you stayed and how much money you spent while there (and what it was on if you can remember).
Thanks!
P.s. The condo is located on "Big Island, Kailua-Kona"
You may try looking at this article before you go. It really saved me a lot of money on a recent trip I took.

Hawaiian vacation help?
Towards the end of july, my fiance and I will be taking a 3 or 4 day vacation to Honolulu, Hawaii.
I’m 17 and he’s 19. Will they let me get 1 hotel room for the both of us even though I’m 17? I’m ordering a flight and hotel package from expedia.com, so does my age even matter when I get there? He’s in another state right now so he’s ordering his ticket separately. If he does so, then if i do the package for one person can I just tell the hotel to add another person to the same room when I get there?
My dad is the one paying for the trip. He will be making me an authorized user of his credit card, if that helps the situation. I was planning on calling ahead too, but we haven’t chosen the hotel we want yet. Thanks.
Just be advised that most all hotels will require a credit card upon arrival or they may charge an extra fee ($100 or so) deposit if you don’t have a credit card at all. Be sure to call the hotel or go to their website to check for fees and such so that you don’t get surprised because of this. Also, you have to be 18 years of age to book a hotel room on your own and since you are under that, the hotel may not uphold the reservation and will need a parents permission to ok you to be there. Check with the hotel and their guidelines to make sure though. Also, he is of legal age and you are not. This may become sticky with the hotel as well. Get all the details before you book anything. This will save you time and hassles because if you make a reservation online with expedia and such, you may not get all of your money back and they will charge extra fees to change or cancel. I used to work for a travel agency and one of my friends there, her sister and niece did this and one of them could not go so they canceled and lost most of their money and would have been charged $1000 each to reschedule.

Hawaiian Vacation Help?
My girlfriend of four years and I are planning a vacation to Hawaii for the end of May or beginning of June. There are a numbernof things we would like to do, but not all of them are on the same island. We’re looking forward to doing the typical beach things like swimming and snorkeling and even some parasailing.
Some of the more exotic things that we’d like to do include maybe touring a rainforest and going on a dinner cruise.
I would love to visit the active volcano on he big island and the crater on Maui but I think that we’ll only be able to do one of those the things. I would love to drive to he top of the crater to watch the stars an the sunrise with her.
In your opinions, what is the bettr thing to visit? The active volcano on the big island or the crater on Maui? Which is easier for is to get to, having never been to Hawaii before?
Well, I’ve been to Kilauea, but I did not hike out to the lava flowing from the Puu Oo vent, and the big crater near the visitor center was not spewing vog back then, just vaguely smelling of sulfur. On the other hand, I’ve driven up to Haleakala several times, and now live on the lower slopes of the volcano, about 20 miles from the summit.
The easiest way to do all the things you want to do may be to stay on Maui, take a helicopter tour out of Kahului that shows you the most scenic spots of East Maui on the way to Kilauea. There are no guarantees when it comes to volcano, but it strikes me that you might actually be more likely to see lava if you took the helicopter tour than if you spent a couple of days getting out to Puu Oo. Then you could drive to Hana, drive up to Haleakala, hang out on the beach on Maui, take a sunset cruise out of Lahaina.
