What are good snorkeling vacation destinations that are closer than Hawaii?
I want to take my kids snorkeling (ages 8 and 13) for the first time. We live on the eastern seaboard (U.S.) Hawaii is a 12-hr. flight from here, minimum. Looking for somewhere to take them that is closer but has clear water and lots of fish.
Mexico ….. beautiful snorkeling at Isla Mujeres. It is a small island off of Cancun that caters to snorkelers. Beautiful coral reefs, blue water and brightly colored schools of fish. Very reasonable price wise, especially if you stay at an all inclusive where all your meals and drinks (cocktails for the adults) are included.
Still Mexico but about 1 hour south of Cancun is an island off the coast called Cozumel. Great snorkeling there as well. Lots of charters available. Probably only a 5 – 6 hour flight from the east coast. 3 1/2 hours from Ohio.
Another place to consider is Aruba… great weather all year round…outside of the hurricane belt… and the most beautiful beach (Eagel Beach) and fabulous snorkeling on reefs and sunken ships. Fabulous, but 3 times more expensive than Mexico.
The Caribbean has some great snorkeling, and it’s not a far trip from the East Coast: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/caribbean/0217020831.html
