Are there any personal whale watching opportunities in New Zealand?

I don’t want to go in a large group of tourists. Does anyone know of any more personal small group whale watching tours? Less commercial? Although I am also not looking to lay down a lot of dough either. I know, picky right? Anyways, I appreciate your help. Oh, and the location doesn’t matter, I’m just planning a trip next year…
Kaikoura, is the main place for whale watching in NZ.
Apart from boats you can also take plane and helicopter rides, so that can be alot more personal.

Look up "Kaikoura Whale watching" in Yahoo web search. There are quite a few tour operators in this ‘capital’ of New Zealand Whale watching. I had a quick look, and I am sure you will find a tour to suit your requirements.
